The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, premiered in 1892. The score blends late-Romantic orchestration with vivid thematic writing and a variety of dance forms, using distinctive orchestral colour to evoke character and scene, and it occupies an important place in Tchaikovsky's ballet output following his earlier stage works.
