Appassionata is the informal name for Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57, published in 1807. The sonata is rooted in Classical forms and has early Romantic intensity, with dramatic contrasts, turbulent textures and demanding virtuosity, and it was composed in Beethoven's middle period as he moved toward more complex harmonic and structural ideas.
