Symphony no. 8
Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Государственный cимфонический оркестр Министерства культуры СССР & Gennadi Nikolayevich Rozhdestvensky
Symphony No. 8 is the eighth symphony by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1943. The four-movement orchestral work is sombre and often turbulent, employing dense orchestration, chromatic harmony and stark dynamic contrasts rooted in late-Romantic and modernist traditions, and it appears within Shostakovich's wartime output as an extended, introspective exploration of the era's musical and emotional tensions.
