Messiah is an oratorio by George Frideric Handel, composed in 1741 and first performed in 1742. Musically it typifies the Baroque oratorio, combining choral writing, solo vocal numbers and orchestral accompaniment, and it represents one of Handel's major late-career sacred works that has shaped the choral repertoire.
