El Cimarrón
Album by Hans Werner Henze & William Pearson & Karlheinz Zöller & Leo Brouwer & Stomu Yamashta
El Cimarrón is a 1970 music-theatre work by German composer Hans Werner Henze. Written as a monodrama for baritone and small instrumental ensemble, it sets the testimony of a Cuban escaped slave and employs a hybrid musical language combining serial techniques, jazz- and Afro-Cuban-inflected rhythms, extended vocal and theatrical gestures, and marked a turn in Henze's engagement with political subjects and extra-European musical sources.
