Götterdämmerung is the fourth and final music drama of Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen cycle, first performed at the Bayreuth Festival in 1876. Musically it epitomises late-Romantic German opera, employing dense orchestration, extended chromatic harmony, leitmotif-driven thematic development and a through-composed structure, and it serves as the culmination of Wagner's compositional and dramatic aims within the Ring cycle.
