How does the rating system work?

TL;DR

Raygum uses a 1 to 5 star scale where each user rates once per album, and the community average is shown on every release page.

The 1-5 star scale

Raygum uses a simple 1 to 5 star rating system for albums. Each star represents:

  • 1 star - Poor
  • 2 stars - Below average
  • 3 stars - Average
  • 4 stars - Great
  • 5 stars - Outstanding

How averages are calculated

The community rating displayed on each release page is the arithmetic mean of all user ratings. Every rating counts equally regardless of when it was submitted. The total number of ratings is also shown so you can see how many people have rated the album.

One rating per album

You can only rate each album once. If you change your mind, you can update your rating at any time by clicking a different star on the release page. Your previous rating will be replaced.

Ratings vs. reviews

Ratings and reviews are separate features. You can rate an album without writing a review, or write a review and include a rating within it. See Can I write a review? for more details.
