Yacht Rock
Yacht Rock emerged in the late 1970s to early 1980s, primarily in Southern California, where it was popularised by a smooth blend of rock, pop, and R&B; think laid-back melodies designed for sipping piña coladas on a yacht, preferably with a questionable shirt and sunglasses. Characterised by slick production, harmonies so smooth they could butter toast, and lyrics that typically reflect the dilemmas of affluent life, it offers a musical escape that somehow still makes you feel just a tad guilty. Interestingly, it has recently resurfaced in popular culture, inspiring ironic love from a new generation who enjoy both the tunes and the art of looking cool whilst doing absolutely nothing.
