Turntablism

Turntablism emerged in the late 1970s in New York City, when DJs realised that spinning records could be as much about manipulation as mere playback, essentially inventing a new Olympic sport for music lovers. It's characterised by scratching, beat juggling, and the kind of dexterity that looks suspiciously like a magician performing sleight of hand, often leaving audiences wondering if they've just seen a wizard or someone having a very good day. This genre has had such an impact that it turned the turntable into an instrument in its own right, much to the chagrin of those poor, unloved tapes gathering dust in the corner of attics everywhere.
