Synthesizer
Synthesizer music emerged in the 1960s when musicians decided that traditional instruments were just far too easy and began experimenting with machines that sound like spaceships having a meltdown. Characterised by lush, electronic textures and an unmistakable 'beep-boop' charm, it often makes you feel as though you’ve accidentally wandered onto the set of a low-budget sci-fi film. Surprisingly, this genre has also been instrumental (pun intended) in shaping pop music, with many bands now sporting synth-laden tracks that could double as ringtones for aliens.
