String Band music made its jaunty entrance in the late 19th century, primarily in the Appalachian mountains, where folks figured that playing instruments in a circle was a brilliant excuse for a knees-up. Characterised by banjos, fiddles, and a good dose of harmonies, it sounds like a cheerful argument over who makes the better corn whiskey.
