Sound System
Sound System culture kicked off in 1950s Jamaica, born from the need for portable music amidst a hot climate and even hotter competition amongst rival sound operators. It features large speakers blaring reggae, dub, and dancehall tunes, often accompanied by a DJ who believes their witty banter is as crucial as the bass thumping through the streets. The phenomenon not only led to the global spread of reggae but also proved that the louder you are, the more friends you make, especially when there’s a rum punch involved.
