Protest Music

Protest music erupted in the 1960s, largely thanks to disillusioned folkies and rockers who realised that strumming a guitar was a far cheaper way to express angst than therapy. Characterised by lyrics that are less about love and more about revolution, it has a delightful knack for turning catchy tunes into rallying cries for social change. One could say it’s the only genre where shouting about injustice can actually get you a festival gig, rather than an awkward silence in the pub.
