Progressive
Progressive music, which originated in the late 1960s as a gloriously ambitious escape from the confines of traditional rock, involves musicians insisting that longer songs, elaborate compositions, and a concept or two will somehow elevate the genre to high art. It's characterised by complex time signatures, virtuosic instrumental solos, and lyrics that often sound like they were penned by a philosophy student on a caffeine high, covering everything from space travel to existential musings. Fans might argue that this genre is the pinnacle of musical sophistication, whilst newcomers might wish they'd just stuck with a catchy pop tune instead.
