Popular music, often referred to as pop, began its meteoric rise in the mid-20th century, becoming the soundtrack for the everyday lives of those who prefer their tunes catchy and their lyrics simple. Characterised by hooks, accessible melodies, and production that sometimes resembles a musical jigsaw puzzle, it often makes you feel like you’ve heard it all before—because you probably have. Despite the sometimes commercial nature of its sound, pop is a chameleon of genres, eternally evolving to stay relevant whilst giving a nod to the wisdom of yesteryear, or at least the last Spotify playlist.
