No Wave
No Wave emerged in late 1970s New York, as a delightful rebellion against everything remotely palatable in music; think of it as the sonic equivalent of stepping in chewing gum whilst wearing sandals. Characterised by dissonance, unconventional structures, and a complete disregard for melody, it sounds like a group of musicians trying to outdo each other in a game of getting as avant-garde as possible, often resulting in a cacophony that is either thrilling or utterly bewildering. One could say it was an early example of how to annoy your neighbours while simultaneously impressing a niche crowd with your taste in obscure music.
