Modernism

Modernism in music sprouted in the early 20th century as composers decided that melodies were so last century, preferring instead a more complex aural landscape that often left listeners wondering if they'd accidentally wandered into a parallel universe. Characterised by dissonance, atonality, and a good dose of avant-garde cheekiness, it aimed to challenge traditional forms and might just involve a few odd-sounding instruments for good measure. The result? An intelligent skirmish of sound that, whilst puzzling at times, pushed the boundaries of musical convention and still gives the ears a good tickle today.
