Modern Jazz

Modern jazz emerged in the mid-20th century, primarily in the United States, when musicians decided that following rules was far too conventional and frankly dull. Characterised by complex harmonies, syncopated rhythms, and a generous dose of improvisation, it often sounds like a group of highly talented individuals having a musical conversation, with varying degrees of coherence. As it developed, modern jazz popularised everything from the use of electronic instruments to the idea that absolutely anything could be called music, much to the confusion of everyone’s grandparents.
