Modern Composition emerged in the late 20th century, primarily in Europe and North America, when composers fancied the idea of scribbling on scores without the pesky constraints of traditional forms. Characterised by an eclectic mix of styles, from minimalist to avant-garde, it often sounds like someone threw a musical buffet together and invited everyone to take a bite, regardless of whether they brought their forks.
