Minimalist
Minimalism in music emerged in the 1960s, primarily in the United States, as composers realised that less can sometimes be a whole lot more, much to the chagrin of anyone who enjoys a good crescendo. Characterised by repetitive structures and a relentless exploration of sound, it often feels like time is simultaneously standing still and galloping away, much like trying to leave a pub when your mate insists on finishing just one more pint. It has a knack for turning even the simplest of ideas into a meditative experience, making you question whether you've just had an epiphany or if you merely forgot your shopping list again.
