Minimal Wave

Minimal Wave originated in the late 1970s, primarily in New York City, when a handful of synth enthusiasts realised they could make music with far fewer elements than most people thought possible, an ingenious way to save on bandmates. Characterised by stark synth lines, cold vocals, and an aesthetic that screams both 'futuristic' and 'slightly ominous', it sounds like a catchy robot trying to have an existential crisis. Interestingly, this genre was largely dug up from the underground in the early 2000s, proving that even music can have a midlife crisis and come back better than ever.
