Merengue
Merengue sprouted in the Dominican Republic in the 19th century, charming the world with its infectious rhythms and the idea that one can dance with a partner whilst performing elaborate footwork without injuring anyone (a feat most impressive). Typically characterised by lively beats and a rather cheeky accordion, it’s essentially the soundtrack to every wedding where Uncle Gerald insists on showing off his questionable dance moves. Beloved for its capacity to turn any gathering into a dance-off, merengue has solidified its place as the life of the party, or at least the one pushing everyone out of their comfort zone.
