Math Rock

Math rock emerged in the late 1980s, originally in the UK, when musicians decided that simply strumming a guitar wasn't quite challenging enough; they threw in complex time signatures as if they were confetti at a particularly nerdy wedding. Characterised by intricate rhythms and elaborate guitar work, it often sounds like the band is having a polite disagreement about what beat to follow, whilst the listener is left pondering if they need an engineering degree to fully appreciate it. It's the perfect choice for people who think standard rock is just too simple and prefer their tunes to feel a bit like solving a Rubik's Cube.
