Internet Rap, emerging in the late 2000s alongside the rise of social media platforms, is where budding MCs discovered they could bypass record labels and upload their mixtapes whilst still in their pyjamas. Characterised by its DIY spirit and often absurdist lyrics, it sounds like a chaotic blend of beats and banter, as if the performer just typed out their thoughts in rhyme whilst on a caffeine binge. You know it’s serious when you consider that memes have become valid promotional tools, making viral fame the new gold standard for aspiring artists.
