Instrumental hip hop emerged in the late 1990s when producers realised that sometimes, words just muddle up a perfectly good groove. Characterised by sampled beats, jazzy chords, and a touch of melancholic charm, it often sounds like the soundtrack to a daydream rather than a street cypher. It's the sort of music that makes you feel unreasonably cool whilst doing absolutely nothing, like sipping tea at a café and pretending you’re deep in thought about life’s great mysteries.
