Gregorian Chant

Gregorian Chant originated in the early Middle Ages, around the 9th century, when someone thought it would be a splendid idea to set Latin texts to music that sounded as solemn as a Sunday service. Characterised by its monophonic, unaccompanied melodies, it often resembles a group of monks harmonising their grocery lists rather than belting out chart-toppers. This ethereal music somehow became the soundtrack to medieval liturgy, perhaps because it was deemed far too fancy for a quick trip to the pub.
