Galant music emerged in the late 17th century as a rather cheerful departure from the complexities of baroque music, created for those who fancied a more straightforward approach to melody, probably whilst drinking tea. Characterised by its elegant and gracious style, it often features ornamentation that isn't quite fancy enough to put off the average listener but just flashy enough to impress the neighbours. It’s the sort of music you'd imagine playing in a posh drawing room while someone explains why they absolutely must attend the latest soirée.
