Freak Folk
Freak Folk emerged in the early 2000s, primarily in the United States, when a handful of bewildered musicians decided that traditional folk needed a whimsical makeover, complete with odd instruments and unkempt hair. It's characterised by a charmingly chaotic blend of acoustic sounds, avant-garde elements, and lyrics that often sound like they were scribbled during a particularly vivid dream or a particularly bad hangover. The result is music that feels both deeply serene and slightly deranged, proving that when it comes to folk, a touch of insanity might be just what the doctor ordered.
