Desert rock emerged in the 1990s, primarily from the arid expanses of California, where musicians apparently thought it wise to fashion an entire genre whilst dodging tumbleweeds and a distinct lack of moisture. Characterised by heavy guitar riffs and a relaxed, often psychedelic sound, it’s like if stoner rock and the open road decided to throw a party under a relentless sun. Many fans argue it provides the perfect soundtrack for any existential crisis, especially if said crisis involves a long drive and questionable life choices.
