Dark Pop
Dark pop emerged in the late 1990s, primarily in the UK and Europe, where artists decided that if they were going to get melancholic, they might as well dress it up in shiny synths and infectious hooks. Characterised by moody lyrics enveloped in catchy melodies, it provides a perfect backdrop for existential musings whilst still being vaguely danceable, which is rather convenient for anyone needing to wallow and shimmy at the same time. You might say it’s the genre for people who want to cry on the dance floor, and who wouldn’t want that bit of drama on a night out?
