Conscious Rap

Conscious rap emerged in the late 1980s, primarily in the United States, as a response to the more commercial flavours of hip hop, proving that it’s possible to be both clever and catchy whilst spitting bars. Characterised by socially aware lyrics and often a sprinkle of political commentary, it sounds like a TED Talk had a baby with a party mixtape, making you nod your head whilst reflecting on the state of the world. Fans often find themselves debating the merits of various artists, much like football supporters, but armed with rhymes instead of scarves.
