Concerto
The concerto burst onto the scene in the Baroque period around the 17th century, when composers realised that juxtaposing a soloist with an orchestra was an excellent way to highlight individual talent whilst keeping the rest of the musicians feeling slightly underappreciated. Characterised by its three-movement structure, this genre is somewhat like a musical conversation where the soloist steals the limelight and the orchestra politely nods along, occasionally chiming in. Unsurprisingly, concertos are often the go-to for musicians trying to convince the world they are a bit more fabulous than everyone else.
