Canterbury Scene

The Canterbury Scene emerged in the late 1960s in, unsurprisingly, Canterbury, England, as a delightful mix of progressive rock and psychedelic flavours, with musicians seemingly intent on outwitting each other in the realms of complex time signatures and whimsical lyrics. It sounds like a musical tea party gone awry, where flutes dance giddily around vibrant guitar riffs and enchanting narratives mingle with a good dose of eccentricity. One could say it’s the soundtrack to a particularly surreal afternoon spent with a cup of Earl Grey and a few mad hatters, which is quite fitting for its influence on the UK’s underground scene.
