Bellydance
Bellydance music sprouted in the Middle East, particularly the Levant region, around the 19th century, when people decided that grooving to complex rhythms whilst wearing sparkly outfits was a thoroughly good idea. It typically features infectious percussion, melodic phrases that could charm a snake, and just enough hints of exoticism to make it sound like a delightful holiday in a bazaar. The genre has inspired countless swaying hips, and if nothing else, it does make a strong case for the idea that dancing should be both expressive and a bit cheeky.
