Ambient House
Ambient House emerged in the late 1980s, mainly courtesy of British DJs who realised that blending house beats with atmospheric synths could create a sonic experience fit for chill-out rooms, rather than just sweaty dance floors. Characterised by dreamy melodies and a relaxed tempo, it often sounds like the musical equivalent of a long, lazy Sunday afternoon, with the slightest hint of existential dread lurking beneath. Oddly enough, it has ensconced itself as the soundtrack for everything from posh cafes to the occasional disastrous first date, proving that even in music, ambience counts for a lot.
