2-Step emerged in the early 1990s in the UK, as a cheeky little sibling of garage music that realised four-on-the-floor beats were rather boring when you could chop them up into quirky, syncopated rhythms. Characterised by its off-kilter beats, playful basslines, and the occasional vocal sample, it sounds like a dancefloor that's had too much caffeine and is trying to impress. This genre not only influenced a wide array of UK dance music but also gave a good jolt to garage sales, as it turns out vinyl records are as essential to DJs as their shoes.
