Gavriil Nikolayevich Popov was a Soviet Russian composer from Saint Petersburg who began his career in the 1920s and worked primarily in classical and orchestral music. His music combined late-Romantic orchestration with experimental, sometimes dissonant harmonies across symphonies, chamber works and film music, and his output and stylistic shifts were shaped by the constraints of Soviet cultural policy.
