Kurt Schwitters was a German artist from Hanover, born in 1887, whose career began in the 1910s and encompassed Dada, Constructivism and his self-styled Merz movement while also embracing experimental sound poetry. His practice combined collage, assemblage and typographic experimentation with linguistic and sonic works such as the Ursonate, evolving into interdisciplinary performances and installations that engaged with modernist and anti-establishment currents in early 20th-century Europe and, later, in exile.
