Howard Skempton is an English composer and pianist born in Liverpool in 1947 who began his career in the late 1960s and is associated with British experimental and minimalist music. His work is characterised by concise, spare forms, simple melodic cells and attention to timbre across solo piano, chamber and vocal pieces, and over time he balanced experimental, indeterminate techniques with more tonal and lyrical writing within the context of late twentieth-century British contemporary music.
