Big Joe Turner was an American blues shouter from Kansas City, Missouri, who began performing in the 1920s and built a career in jazz, jump blues and rhythm and blues. His loud, resonant vocal style contributed to the transition from swing-era jazz to the emerging rock and roll and rhythm and blues sounds, and he was active in both nightclub performances and recording sessions.
