Hubert Sumlin was an American blues guitarist from Greenwood, Mississippi who began his career in the Chicago blues scene in the 1950s and worked extensively as a touring and recording sideman before later leading his own projects. His playing featured terse single-note lines, rhythmic displacements, and expressive use of tone, influencing later blues-rock guitarists, and in later decades he expanded into solo recordings and cross-genre collaborations while retaining a foundation in electric blues.
