Martyn Bates is an English singer-songwriter from Nuneaton, Warwickshire, who began his career in the early 1980s as a founding figure in the post-punk and experimental independent scene and later developed a parallel solo career. His work ranges from stark post-punk and experimental art-rock with his early projects to intimate, folk-influenced and chamber-folk solo recordings that frequently draw on traditional song material, avant-garde textures and collaborative ventures within the British independent and neo-folk milieu.
