Bertolt Brecht was a German playwright, poet and theatre practitioner born in Augsburg who began his career after World War I and became associated with epic theatre, political drama and theatrical song forms. He developed a practice that integrated didactic verse, spoken and sung text, documentary elements and the alienation effect to foreground social critique, evolving through exile and post-war activity to influence twentieth-century theatre and song traditions.
