Lotte Lenya was an Austrian-born singer and actress who began her career in Berlin's cabaret and theatre scene in the 1920s and later worked on stage and in film in both Europe and the United States, performing primarily in cabaret, theatre song and early 20th-century art music. Her repertoire combined elements of German cabaret, theatre song and art music, and her career bridged interwar European cabaret traditions and mid-20th-century musical theatre and film with an emphasis on interpretative theatrical delivery.
