Ernesto Nazareth was a Brazilian composer and pianist from Rio de Janeiro, active from the late 19th century into the early 20th century, whose music bridged salon music and popular forms such as choro, maxixe and tango. He blended European classical and salon traditions with Afro-Brazilian rhythms and syncopation, developing stylised piano pieces and dance tunes that helped shape the vocabulary of Brazilian popular music.
