Étienne Nicolas Méhul was a French composer born in 1763 who began his career in Paris in the 1780s and became prominent as an opera composer active during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras. His music combined Classical-era orchestration with dramatic harmonies and rhythmic vitality, evolving to incorporate early Romantic expressive elements and reflecting the political and cultural shifts of late-18th and early-19th-century France.
