Charles Avison was an English composer and organist, born in 1709, who was active in Newcastle upon Tyne from the 1730s and worked as a concert promoter and church musician within the Baroque and early Classical traditions. His output centred on concerti grossi, keyboard works and arrangements that blended Italian Baroque influences with emerging Classical sensibilities, and he also authored a contemporary treatise on musical expression while helping to establish provincial concert culture in northern England.
