Gustave Charpentier

Gustave Charpentier was a French composer born in Dieuze in 1860 who trained at the Paris Conservatoire and began his career in the late 19th century writing operas and vocal music. His music, exemplified by the opera Louise, combines lyrical realism and expressive orchestral colour with an interest in urban and social themes, aligning him with turn-of-the-century French verismo and naturalist tendencies.
