Curtis Mayfield was an American singer-songwriter and record producer from Chicago who began his career in the 1950s as the lead singer and principal songwriter of the soul and R&B group The Impressions. His music blended soul, gospel and funk with socially conscious lyrics about civil rights and urban life, and his solo work in the 1970s incorporated funk and orchestral elements for cinematic soundtracks and concept-driven albums.
