Thomas Weelkes was an English composer and organist from Sussex who began his career in the late 16th century serving as a church and cathedral musician during the English Renaissance and early Baroque periods. He produced collections of madrigals and Anglican church music characterised by expressive word-painting, contrapuntal textures and chromatic passages, reflecting the English madrigal tradition and developments in early 17th-century liturgical composition.
